Easter job in the Barents Sea

Two welders from Tratec Halvorsen were sent by charter plane to Hammerfest to do a job on the Goliat field.

- This is a demanding repair and modification job in a hired process heat exchanger at Goliat FPSO, says Odd Aksel Jørgensen.

He is a maintenance consultant in the Barents Sea for Vår Energi AS, an operator in the field.

The fact that Tratec Halvorsen was given the assignment is no accident.

- Complicated matters

- These are complicated matters. Very few Norwegian companies have the welding expertise needed to do such a job, says Jørgensen.

Specifically, this involves special welding in 22cr duplex, as a steel material widely used in pipes and valves offshore. Tratec Halvorsen has welders that are certified for such assignments.

Korona Help

The hired heater on the Goliat FPSO - which is an abbreviation for floating production storage and offloading platform - is supplied by an Italian company. But in these coronation times, it is difficult for the Italians to follow up the maintenance. As a result, Vår Energi AS needed help elsewhere.

Through the collaboration partner National Oilwell Varco, the assignment was given to Tratec Halvorsen.

The Goliath field is an oil and gas field located 85 kilometers northwest of Hammerfest. Goliath is considered the first oil discovery north of Lofoten. The first oil was produced on March 12, 2016, and the field was officially opened on April 18 of the same year.
