WHEN IT IS Once fully welded, the «Pig Receiver» will weigh a full 12 tonnes.

– Each joint has 90 kilos of welding added. From a purely welding-technical perspective, the job is demanding, says Nielsen.

«The »Pig Receiver" will be installed on the Norwegian continental shelf.

– WHAT IS What's special about this «Pig Receiver» is that it can withstand very high pressure. When we are finished with the annealing and painting job, it is transported west by car, says Kjell Vidar Netland, who is the head of pressure equipment.

In the oil industry, «pigging» is a term for a pipe-cleaning process. Brushes are inserted into the pipe and pushed along the pipeline to clean out rust, wax, and debris. The scraping sound that occurs during the process can resemble a squealing pig – hence the name «pigging».

The brush is placed in a «pig launcher,» which is a type of launch station, and is then pushed down the pipe until it reaches the receiving station – the so-called «pig receiver.».
